TAKING CARE OF YOUR MOROCCAN THOBE

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

“O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful.”

— Surah al-A’raf: 26

Clothing is a bounty that is exclusive to humans, no other creation enjoys such a bounty and we should always praise and be grateful to Allah for Providing us with means to cover our nakedness.

There are two parts to taking care of a new garment. The most important part is being grateful to Allah and praising Him as it is Allah who provided you with that garment. Abū Sa’īd al-Khudhrī (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ put on clothes, he would name each item – whether it was a shirt, pair of trousers or turban – and say:

“اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِيهِ ، أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ
O Allah, all praise is for You! as You have clothed me, I ask You for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made.”

— (Abū Dāwūd 4020 & Tirmidhī 1767)

The above is a Dua we should always remember to recite when we wear a new piece of clothing, as well as the Dua below which should be recited every time after wearing clothes. Mu’ādh b. Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If anyone puts on a garment and says (dua below) his past and future sins will be forgiven,

“اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِيْ كَسَانِيْ هٰذَا الثَّوْبَ ، وَرَزَقَنِيْهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّيْ وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any power or might on my part.”

— Abū Dāwūd 4023 & Tirmidhī 3458

We should always remember that nothing happens without the permission of Allah, what happens to us is our Qadr hence why it is of utmost importance to always supplicate to Allah seeking protection from the evil even when wearing a garment. As muslims we should always ask Allah for the good in everything we do and own.

Haven’t we all heard stories of peoples new garments, gadgets breaking soon after they bought them? The evil envious eye is real and we should all seek protection from it at all times.

The second part of looking after your Moroccan thobe is following our guidelines regarding cleaning the garment.

We take extra care to ensure the thobes you buy are of top quality, however in order for them to last long we encurage you to avoid washing them in hot water. Ideally they should be Dry cleaned however if its not possible the thobe should be hand washed in temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius and should NOT be put in the washing machine or tumble dryer.

Once the thobe is washed we encourage to slightly stretch out the embriodery parts of the thobe by holding each end and gently pulling it away from each other.

If there are any stains that need removing it is best to use oxi powder for coloured clothes diluted in a little bit of water and applied on to the stain directly with a clean cloth and gently rubbing it until the stain disappears. If the stain is persistant, leave the diluted oxi on the stain for some time. Once the stain is gone either let it dry or wash it in the washing machine.

It is best to let it dry on a hanger.
Once dry, avoid ironing the thobe at very high temperatures to prevent burning the fabric (Use low to medium temperatures instead).

We ask Allah to guide us to that which Pleases Him, and to save us from extravagance!
